Eggshell is a forgiving choice for many living-area walls. Satin is easier to wipe and often works well in kitchens, bathrooms and busy spaces, although it shows more surface flaws. Semi-gloss is commonly reserved for trim and doors. The room’s light, wall condition and cleaning needs should make the decision.
Common causes include weak ventilation, condensation, soap residue, old glossy paint, damp drywall or the wrong primer. Mildew-resistant paint can help the finish, but it cannot correct a fan that does not vent outdoors or a surface that was coated while contaminated or wet.
Sometimes, when the surface is dry and the temperature, humidity and forecast stay inside the coating manufacturer’s limits for application and cure time. We judge the actual wall and weather window—not just the month. Starting before rain or painting damp siding is not worth the risk.
